Rebel 500 oil change — step by step with part numbers

An oil change is the single most important maintenance task on the Rebel 500, and it is straightforward enough to do at home with basic tools. Honda recommends every 12,000 km or 12 months (whichever comes first) for the CMX500, but many riders change at 8,000–10,000 km — especially in stop-start urban riding.

What you need

Engine oil10W-30 or 10W-40, JASO MA/MA2 wet-clutch ratedHonda GN4, Castrol Power 1, or Motul 7100 are popular choices
Oil capacity~2.5 L (with filter change)Confirm against your owner’s manual — capacity varies slightly by year

Tools17 mm socket (drain bolt), oil filter wrench or 65 mm socket, drain pan, funnelA torque wrench is recommended for the drain bolt (~30 Nm)

The procedure

1. Warm the engine

Run the bike for 3–5 minutes. Warm oil drains faster and carries more contaminants out with it. Do not run it until the engine is too hot to work around — just warm.

2. Drain the old oil

Place a drain pan under the engine. Remove the drain bolt (right side of the crankcase, 17 mm head). Let the oil drain fully — tilt the bike slightly if needed to get the last bit out.

Tip: The drain bolt has a small spring and mesh screen behind it on some CMX500 years. Do not lose these into the drain pan. Set them aside, clean them, and reinstall.

3. Replace the oil filter

The spin-on oil filter sits on the front of the engine. Use an oil filter wrench or the K&N’s built-in nut to remove it. Wipe the gasket surface clean, apply a thin film of fresh oil to the new filter’s O-ring, and hand-tighten the new filter until the gasket contacts, then turn an additional 3/4 turn. Do not over-tighten.

4. Reinstall the drain bolt

Fit a new crush washer onto the drain bolt. Thread the bolt in by hand first (to avoid cross-threading), then torque to approximately 30 Nm (22 ft-lb). Over-tightening strips the aluminium crankcase threads — this is a common and expensive mistake.

5. Fill with fresh oil

Pour in approximately 2.2 L through the filler cap, then check the sight glass on the right side of the engine. Add oil in small increments until the level sits between the two marks with the bike upright on level ground.

6. Run and re-check

Start the engine, let it idle for 30 seconds to circulate oil through the new filter, then shut it off. Wait two minutes and re-check the sight glass. Top up if needed.

Oil choice: synthetic vs conventional

The Rebel 500’s parallel twin is not fussy. A quality JASO MA2-rated 10W-40 semi-synthetic (Honda HP4M, Castrol Power 1) is the safe default. Full-synthetic (Motul 7100, Castrol Power RS) offers marginal benefits in extreme heat but costs more. Avoid car oil — it is not rated for wet-clutch motorcycles.
