Rebel 500 chain and sprocket maintenance — tension, lube, and when to replace

  • maintenance

The Rebel 500 uses a 520-pitch O-ring sealed drive chain — the same general spec as most mid-displacement Hondas. Chain maintenance is the second most important routine task after oil changes, and neglecting it accelerates wear on both the chain and the sprockets.

Maintenance schedule

Honda recommends checking chain tension and lubrication every 1,000 km (600 miles). In practice:

  • Lube after every wet ride or at least every 500–1,000 km in dry conditions.
  • Tension check every 1,000 km or whenever you notice the chain looking slack or making noise.
  • Full replacement — a well-maintained O-ring chain on a Rebel 500 typically lasts 20,000–30,000 km. Replace the chain and both sprockets together — running a new chain on worn sprockets accelerates wear on the new chain.

Chain tension check

  1. Put the bike on the side stand (or a rear stand if you have one).
  2. Find the tightest point by slowly rolling the bike and checking slack at multiple positions — chains stretch unevenly.
  3. At the tightest point, push the chain up and down at the midpoint between sprockets. Honda spec for the CMX500 is approximately 25–35 mm of free play (measured at the bottom run of the chain, midway between sprockets).
  4. If out of spec, adjust using the rear axle adjusters on both sides of the swingarm. Loosen the axle nut, turn the adjusters equally on both sides, then re-torque the axle nut.

Important: Always adjust both sides equally. Uneven adjustment misaligns the rear wheel, which causes accelerated chain and sprocket wear and affects handling.

Lubrication

Use a motorcycle-specific chain lube — not WD-40 (which is a solvent, not a lubricant). Good options:

  • Maxima Chain Wax — wax-based, less fling, good for dry conditions
  • Motul C4 Factory Line — synthetic, excellent wet-weather performance
  • Generic O-ring-safe chain lube from Amazon — works fine; avoid anything labelled “degreaser”

Apply to the inside of the chain (the side that contacts the sprockets) while slowly spinning the rear wheel. Wipe off excess after a few minutes.

Sprocket wear indicators

Replace sprockets when you see:

  • Hooked teeth — the teeth lean forward in the direction of chain travel instead of being symmetrical.
  • Sharp, pointed tips — new sprocket teeth have a flat or slightly rounded top.
  • Chain no longer wraps evenly — if the chain lifts off the rear sprocket at the top, the sprocket is worn beyond safe use.

Gearing changes (optional)

Some riders swap to a -1 front / +2 rear sprocket ratio for more low-end acceleration in city riding. This shortens top speed and increases chain wear slightly, but the Rebel 500 is rarely ridden at its top speed anyway. If you change gearing, you may need a longer chain — count links before ordering.
