Visibility upgrades for the Honda Rebel 500 — lights, modulators, and reflectives

Cruisers sit low in traffic. The Rebel 500’s single headlight and small tail light are adequate for compliance, but “adequate” is not the same as “visible.” Three categories of upgrades help — in rough order of cost-effectiveness.

1. Brake light modulator (best ROI)

A brake light modulator pulses the tail light for a brief burst when you first hit the brakes, then reverts to steady. This grabs attention from drivers who have tuned out the constant stream of brake lights ahead of them.

TST Industries makes a plug-and-play modulator for Honda OEM tail lights that fits the CMX300, CMX500, and CMX1100. Modes include pulse, strobe, and standard. It wires inline with the existing harness — no cutting required.

Cost: Around $30–50 USD depending on source. The highest-ROI safety spend on the Rebel.

Legality note: Brake light modulators are legal in most jurisdictions including NZ (as long as the light remains red and the flash rate is reasonable), but check your local WoF / rego requirements.

2. Reflective rim tape (passive, zero power draw)

Reflective rim tape or decals add side visibility at night with no wiring, no battery draw, and no maintenance. SKDA, M-Stickers, and various Amazon sellers offer Honda Rebel–specific sizing.

Cost: $15–40 for a full wheel set. See our stickers & decals section for more options.

3. Auxiliary LED lights (active forward lighting)

Forward-facing auxiliary LEDs dramatically improve your visibility to oncoming traffic and fill in the Rebel’s single-headlight blind spots. Two tiers:

Budget: generic fork-mount LED fog lights

A pair of 30 W LED pods with universal fork clamps. Quality varies — look for waterproof-rated units with proper beam patterns (flood or combo, not a raw LED chip). Available on Amazon AU/US for $30–60.

Premium: Denali D7 / DM series

Denali Electronics makes purpose-built motorcycle auxiliary lights with proper wiring harnesses and mounting brackets. The Denali D7 is a forward-throw LED with a high/low switch. Fitment on the CMX500 depends on your crash bar or fork bracket setup — Denali’s site has mounting guides.

Cost: $200–400+ for a pair with wiring harness. Sold through RevZilla and Amazon.

LED turn signal upgrades

The stock CMX500 turn signals are bulb-type on most years. Swapping to LED indicators improves visibility and modernizes the look. Important: LED indicators draw less current than bulbs, which can cause hyperflash (rapid blinking). You will need a load resistor or an LED-compatible flasher relay to fix the blink rate.
